Why caring for baby teeth is so important

Warum die Pflege der Milchzähne so wichtig ist

As you probably know, milk teeth are the first teeth in the human dentition. They play an important role in the development of our body. For this reason, a lack of attention to daily dental care and hygiene in childhood can have unforeseen consequences for you and your child. In today's blog post, we explain why milk teeth play an important role in the growth of the body.

How are baby teeth structured?

The first teeth in the human dentition are milk teeth. You and your child's incisors grow from the first year of life. By the second year of life, the milk teeth have fully developed. There are now a total of 20 teeth. This includes 10 teeth each in the upper and lower jaw. They are in turn divided into 4 incisors, 4 molars and 2 canines.

Start of care and what is included in sensible care?

It is important that you ensure that your child is receiving adequate care when their first milk teeth come through. This includes brushing their teeth at least once a day, or even better, twice a day. Once your child is two years old, the sensitive milk teeth should be cleaned in the evening and in the morning.

Gauze or cotton buds can be helpful in supporting the care of babies. A very small children's toothbrush such as our emmi®-dent ultrasonic toothbrush or our emmi®-dent bamboo toothbrush for children in combination with a very small portion (pea size) of our special children's toothpaste supports thorough tooth cleaning in children.

Which types of baby tooth damage can be prevented?

If milk teeth are not cared for properly, there is a risk that the first teeth will develop caries in addition to the typical enamel discoloration. In extreme cases, they may even have to be pulled. If this results in complicated treatments, your child may suffer trauma to their milk teeth.

Milk teeth not only have an important role in development. They also have special features that go far beyond grinding up food. If, for example, one of the milk teeth is missing, the neighboring teeth can shift. They move into the gap that opens up, which can then lead to the existing tooth having no space underneath. It can no longer develop, let alone grow healthily. Misaligned teeth can therefore not only cause visual impairments, but also pain and many other consequences.

For example, your incisors are responsible for the acquisition of language. They are essential for the correct pronunciation of sibilants. If the incisors are missing, speech defects can occur.
