Bad breath: It does not always have to be caused by illness
Bad breath does not always occur as a symptom of an illness. The cause of unpleasant odors from the mouth is often caused by eating very odorous foods or drinks. Onions, garlic, coffee, alcohol and various medications can cause bad breath in the short term. What is particularly characteristic of short-term bad breath is that in most cases it originates directly in the oral cavity. It cannot be traced back to deeper diseases or gastrointestinal problems. Nevertheless, persistent bad breath can always be a sign of a disease.
Short-term bad breath is characterized by the fact that it can only be detected in the exhaled air and only for a specific, relatively short period of time. If bad breath occurs outside the oral cavity, it can also be detected when exhaling through the nose. In this case, it is referred to as halitosis.
