What do cracks in the tongue mean?

Cracks in the tongue can be irritating or worrying, especially if you don't know exactly what they mean. In this blog post, we want to give you an overview of what cracks in the tongue mean, how you can recognise them and treat them if necessary.

What are cracks in the tongue and how do you recognise them?

Fissures in the tongue, also known as tongue furrows or lingua plicata, are

  • depressions or
  • fissures,

that form on the surface of the tongue. They can vary in depth and length, and their location can vary from person to person.

In some cases, the fissures may also be accompanied by mild pain or burning, especially when irritated by certain foods or drinks.

Causes and significance of cracks in the tongue

The exact cause of cracks in the tongue is not yet fully understood. In many cases, however, they appear to be genetic and occur in several family members. Cracks in the tongue can also develop over time and become deeper or more pronounced with age.

Although cracks in the tongue are usually harmless and pose no particular health concerns, in some cases they may be associated with certain conditions or deficiencies. These include, among others

  • Fungal infections,
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency,
  • iron deficiency or
  • zinc deficiency.

If you notice cracks in your tongue and are concerned about possible connections with your health, you should consult a doctor or dentist.

Treatment and prevention of cracks in the tongue

Good oral hygiene is crucial to keep cracks in the tongue clean and free of bacteria. Make sure to brush and floss your teeth regularly. A soft toothbrush or tongue cleaner can help to gently clean the tongue without irritating the fissures.

Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can help prevent possible deficiencies associated with cracks in the tongue.
